Top 5 Fish Species On The Sunshine Coast

Man With A Live Yellow Tail Tuna

Due to the spectacular aquatic habitats surrounding our enormous island continent, it's not surprising that many varieties of fish species in Australia can't be found anywhere else on the planet. If you're interested in fishing on the Sunshine Coast, you'll be pleased to know that there's a wide selection of fish species for you to find. So, read on to learn about five fish species that you can uncover on the Sunshine Coast during a fishing charter.

1. Snapper

Among the most common species of fish on Sunshine Coast outings is snapper, which can reach an incredible 1.3m in length! You'll usually find adult snappers in deeper waters and youngsters in the bays.

We catch snapper almost all year round, but the peak time is from November to January. The flesh of the snapper is strong and flaky, making it the ideal dinner fish. You can enjoy them with the skin on or off.

2. Tuna

The seas off the Sunshine Coast include excellent stocks of various tuna species, including yellowfin, bigeye and albacore, with many of them reaching trophy size. Our temperate southern seas are home to the biggest tuna.

In the coastal north, huge shoals of kawa-kawa tuna provide excellent angling for fly and lure fishermen. March, April and May are prime months for tuna fish.

3. Dolphinfish

Dolphin fish, often referred to as Mahi Mahi, are a kind of surface-dwelling fish found along the Sunshine Coast. In Hawaiian, the word 'Mahi' means 'very powerful' and they're important prey for larger species.

Dolphin fish are easily identified by their sparkling hues in the sea, but they often change colour multiple times when captured and landed.

4. Kingfish

Kingfish are abundant in the Sunshine Coast, where they thrive along with their less well-known but appropriately named relatives: the Samson fish. February, March and April are the best months for catching kingfish.

5. Parrotfish

The parrotfish belongs to a broad sub-family, including over 600 species, and is easily recognisable by its parrot-like beak. They are efficient predators that eat a variety of tiny invertebrates and live in shallow tropical seas among coral reefs.
