What To Take When Going On A Fishing Charter

Trolling Rods For Deep Sea Fishing

When you've booked the fishing charter trip of a lifetime, packing is everything. But how do you know what to take with you? You might think you need to stock up on special gear, but chances are you'll actually have most of the essentials on hand at home. To take the hassle out of preparing for your charter, we've put together this handy guide to what every fishing enthusiast needs to pack before setting out on the water.

Clothing

Layers, layers, layers. It doesn't matter where you're going - when you're on the open water, temperatures can quickly drop, even if you're in a typically warm location. At the same time, you won't have much shade out on the boat, so you'll want to be able to easily remove clothing if needed.

Make sure you pack a:

  • Windbreaker or spray jacket to protect you and keep you warm
  • Pair of shorts for tropical destinations, long pants for everywhere else
  • Lightweight shirt to shield you from sunburn - linen's a great choice
  • Pair of gloves to protect your hands from sunburn, line cuts, and unpleasant weather
  • Pair of rubber-soled shoes, like sneakers - avoid thongs at all costs!

Weather Protection

Chances are you've already thought about sunblock, but you'll need more than that when out on the water. The last thing you want to do is spend your fantastic fishing experience hiding away in your boat's cabin. Open water doesn't have much shade, and the ocean tends to reflect a glare that can be uncomfortable. At the same time, conditions can change quickly, and surprise rainfall can wreak havoc on unsuspecting anglers.

Don't forget to bring:

  • Sunscreen offering UVA and UVB protection
  • Lip balm with sun protection
  • A hat with a brim
  • Polarised sunglasses to cut through the water glare
  • A waterproof jacket and rain pants, to shield you from the rain

First Aid

It's always better to be safe than sorry, and we recommend loading up your charter with the medical supplies you think you might need while out on the water. These might include:

  • Seasickness tablets, which should be taken ahead of setting out on the water and shouldn't be mixed with caffeine
  • Insect repellant - we all know that water and bugs are the perfect match!
  • A small first-aid kit stocked with band-aids and antiseptic
  • Hand sanitiser and wet wipes
  • Prescription medications - it's also important you tell your captain which meds you're bringing on board and advise them of any potential medical situations that might arise

Storage

Bags and containers are essential for any fishing charter, as they'll protect your items from salt and spray. Bring along a:

  • Backpack or sturdy bag
  • Waterproof bag to protect any electronics or documents you might need to bring

Anything Else?

And while you're at it, you might want to throw in your:

  • Camera, to record the perfect catch
  • Hand towel to clean up the mess
